I had wanted to go to Urban Float after hearing about it from a friend. In a world of over stimulation, I am seeking quiet. A place where no one needs me; where no one can find me. I want to step into a world of my own.
Here’s some info copied from their website:
- Decrease stress. Reduce pain. Improve creativity.
- Rest in a private, sensory-managed float pod for 60 minutes.
- Weightlessly relax in purified water & 1,200 lbs of Epsom salt for proven physical, mental and emotional benefits.
- The more you float, the better the benefits.
- Floating helps guests disconnect with clinically proven results including stress and anxiety relief, workout recovery, pain reduction, and improved mental focus.

Mom and Greg flew in for my birthday, so we made it part of my birthday weekend. Janet, my mom’s best friend, and Mom went with me. We filled out questionnaires and were given a tour. It is a small place with 6 floating rooms and a “vanity room” to fix hair or makeup.
Once in my room, I strip off my clothes, and step into a shower to rinse any oils or products off of my skin. Dripping, I carefully, but excitedly move across the textured floor to the pod’s opening. I lift my leg over the side. Slip into the water. The water feels slick against my skin and slightly cool. The air in the pod is warm and heavy. The purple light gives everything a sort of alien feel. I feel like I am entering a new realm, my own world … it can be alien. It takes a minute or two to sort out how to close the lid (it is pretty high above my head), turn off the light, and get settled in a comfortable floating position. It feels strange to be in quiet, just to be … still …
And what a fabulous experience it was.
